I have put together a team of walkers and I am currently trying to raise money and awareness to support of “The Coldest Night of the Year” on Saturday, Feb. 20th, starting at the Sources Office: 822 Maple Street, White Rock, with a walk along the board walk to the west side of White Rock, then return for complimentary hot dogs, chili and warm drinks.
Registration starts at 4:00 pm, with opening ceremonies at 5:00 pm, walk begins at 5:15 pm, with routes closing at 8:00 pm. Walk for as little or long, as you like.
Should you join in we will be raising funds for our local Sources, formerly Peace Arch Community Services, which have been in the White Rock area, for over 30 years. Sources run the food bank, offer counselling for individuals and families. They also offers resources to help individuals work themselves back into the community and work force. This includes running a cleaning service, where all the individuals are bonded and supervised, along with a local cafeteria at Softball City. I was personally touched by their services when I first developed breast cancer. I was blessed by one on one counselling and would love to give back to this excellent community event.
Funds generated from “The Coldest Night of the Year”, are specifically for support of the local Sources Women’s shelter, with on average 10,000 women and children each year, using the facilities: daily lunches for those living in cars, on the streets, and quite simply in need. They are also offered a hot shower, and donated clothing. Men are given coupons to the local Food Bank and Super Flutty, run by the Hospital Auxiliary for clothing.
Funds generated are also in support of the Rent Bank Program, where families can call on Sources to pay their rent or utilities for the month, to keep a roof over their heads and the lights on. 70% of the individuals, do pay this money back.
